Last week the Miami Herald reported on a story in which a local middle school counselor forcibly removed a set of gold caps from a fifth grade students mouth. As can be expected an investigation is ensuing and the students mother is crying foul.
It's hard to take the side of a school official that apparently committed assault on a student. You just can't do that today. Heck, school officials can barely suspend or give students detention without the worry of litigation these days. But I'm going to take the side of the school official on principle. Why am I doing that? Because to be blunt, I'm more annoyed that the parent of this student bought him gold caps to begin with.
Let's be clear. No fifth grade student needs $500 pieces of gold in his mouth. In fact, no fifth grade student needs, or should have a $500 piece of jewelry of any kind. Period.
Yes, school official's should not touch students, unless they have to defend themselves from them. But come on. Of all the things to spend money on this mother thought gold teeth was the best thing for her little black son? This is another example of why Bill Cosby is correct in his comments about what parents in the inner cities are spending their money on.
She could have bought him a few good books. OK, maybe that's boring for many fifth graders. How about putting that money toward college. Even a $100 pair of sneakers would have been better. But no she goes out and buys a gift that is associated with drug dealers, hoods, and gansta rappers. Wow, great way to instill the right mental thinking and demeanor in order to be successful in America.
